LinkedIn About Section — The Formula That Drives Recruiter Messages

The About section is the highest-value real estate on your LinkedIn profile after your headline. Most professionals leave it generic. Here is the formula that converts profile views into recruiter conversations.

★ 4.9/5 · Clients report 2–4x more recruiter messages · Former engineering hiring manager
The LinkedIn About section formula
  • Part 1 — Identity: Level + role + domain (your opening hook)
  • Part 2 — Outcomes: 2–3 specific results with numbers
  • Part 3 — Specialization: What problems you solve best
  • Part 4 — Targeting: What you are looking for next

The opening line — your most important sentence

LinkedIn shows only the first ~220 characters of your About section before truncating to "see more." The opening line must establish your professional identity immediately — before anyone decides whether to click.

Weak openings (common patterns)

  • "I am a passionate professional who loves solving problems."
  • "Experienced software engineer with a track record of success."
  • "I believe that great teams build great products."
  • "Results-driven leader with 10+ years of experience."

These waste the first line. They say nothing specific and fail the hook entirely.

Strong openings

  • "Staff Software Engineer specializing in distributed systems and platform infrastructure at Series B–public company scale."
  • "Senior Product Manager with 7 years building B2B SaaS products — currently at [Company] owning a $40M ARR product line."
  • "VP of Engineering with a background in cloud-native infrastructure and a track record scaling engineering orgs from 15 to 80+."
  • "Senior FP&A Manager | $400M ARR SaaS | Board-ready financial storytelling | CFA."

Building the body — outcomes and specialization

After the opening identity statement, the body of your About section should cover two things: what you have accomplished (with numbers) and what you specifically do best.

Outcomes — what to include

  • Your 2–3 most impressive, relevant results — not a full resume recap
  • Quantify every outcome: "$12M ARR shipped," "40% latency reduction," "scaled team from 8 to 35 engineers"
  • Connect outcomes to business impact, not just task completion
  • Use the format: built/led/shipped/reduced/grew [X] → resulting in [Y]

Specialization — what problems you solve

  • Name your specific domain: "real-time data pipelines," "growth and monetization," "compliance infrastructure"
  • Describe the type of problem you are best at: "I specialize in scaling systems that break between Series B and IPO"
  • Mention industries or company types if relevant: "B2B SaaS, fintech, marketplace businesses"

Full examples by role and level

Senior Software Engineer

Senior Backend Engineer specializing in distributed systems and API infrastructure at high-throughput, consumer-scale products.

At [Company], I led the rewrite of our core API gateway — moving from a monolithic Ruby service to a distributed Go architecture that reduced p99 latency from 340ms to 60ms and handled a 5x traffic increase with no downtime. I own reliability for services processing 2M+ requests/day.

I specialize in the hard technical work that comes right before or after hypergrowth: redesigning systems that were built for speed and are now breaking under load.

Currently exploring Senior or Staff Backend Engineer roles at Series B–D companies in fintech or infrastructure. Happy to connect if you are building at scale.

Senior FP&A

Senior FP&A Manager | $400M ARR SaaS | Strategic finance for growth-stage tech | CFA.

I build the financial infrastructure that helps leadership teams make faster, better-informed decisions — revenue models, board decks, scenario planning, and the data pipelines behind them. At [Company], I rebuilt our ARR forecasting model, reducing variance from ±18% to ±6% and cutting the monthly close process from 12 days to 4.

I specialize in SaaS and marketplace businesses where the financial narrative is as important as the numbers — and where the CFO needs a business partner, not just an analyst.

Director of Product

Director of Product | B2B Fintech | Payments, embedded finance, and compliance infrastructure | Scaling from $10M to $100M ARR.

I've led product for the payments and identity layer at [Company] since Series A — taking it from a single-use API product to a platform used by 1,400+ enterprise clients. We shipped PCI-DSS Level 1 compliance in 9 months while growing ARR 3x and expanding the team from 4 to 18 PMs.

I specialize in the intersection of regulated financial infrastructure and developer experience — products that have to be both technically reliable and commercially compelling.

Currently exploring VP Product and CPO-track roles at fintech companies between $30M and $200M ARR. Happy to connect.

VP of Engineering

VP of Engineering | Cloud-native platforms & B2B SaaS | Scaling engineering organizations through hypergrowth.

I've built and led engineering organizations at three growth-stage companies — taking teams from 12 to 80+ engineers while shipping the infrastructure that supported 10x revenue growth in each case. At [Company], I restructured 6 independent teams into a platform-first organization and drove the technical decisions that reduced deployment frequency from monthly to daily.

I specialize in the organizational and technical transition from startup speed to enterprise reliability — building the systems, processes, and culture that let engineering scale without slowing down.

Now exploring CTO and VP Engineering roles at Series B–D companies with strong engineering cultures. Open to conversations.
