LinkedIn headline mistakes to avoid
- "Software Engineer at Acme Corp." Your employer is already visible in your experience section. Your headline should add information, not repeat it. Use this space for keywords and positioning.
- "Experienced professional seeking new opportunities." This communicates desperation and no specific value. Name what you do and at what level instead.
- "Results-driven leader passionate about innovation." Meaningless without specifics. Every LinkedIn profile claims passion for innovation. None of these words help you appear in recruiter searches.
- No level signal. "Software Engineer" without "Senior," "Staff," or "Principal" leaves your seniority ambiguous. Recruiters searching for specific levels may skip your profile entirely.
- Too many emojis. One emoji used strategically is fine. Five emojis between every phrase looks like spam and reduces click-through rates in professional searches.
- No keywords. LinkedIn search is keyword-driven. If the technologies, specializations, and role titles relevant to your target are not in your headline, you will not appear in recruiter searches for those terms.
- Outdated title from a previous role. Your headline should reflect your current level and what you are targeting — not your title from 3 years ago.
