Common questions
How do I get engineers to write ADRs without it becoming bureaucracy?
Keep the format lightweight: context, decision, alternatives, consequences. One page maximum. If writing the ADR takes more than 30 minutes, the template is too complex. ADRs should capture thinking, not replace it.
Should every technical decision get an ADR?
No. ADRs are for decisions that are consequential, hard to reverse, or likely to be questioned. Library choice for a minor utility doesn't need an ADR. Database selection for a core service does.
