Section-by-section optimization guide

1. Headline (220 characters)

The most important field for recruiter search visibility. LinkedIn's algorithm weights your headline heavily. Formula: [Level + Title] | [Specialization] | [Value or targeting signal]

  • Include your exact target role title
  • Include 2–3 domain or technology keywords
  • Use all 220 characters — do not leave space unused
  • Do not just list your current employer

2. About section (150–300 words)

Four parts: identity, outcomes, specialization, targeting. First line must hook before "see more." Write in first person. End with a specific targeting statement.

  • Opens with your level + role + domain
  • Includes 2–3 quantified outcomes
  • Names your specific specialization
  • Closes with what you are looking for

3. Experience section

Each role: accurate job title (how LinkedIn categorizes you), 3–5 quantified bullets. Do not copy your resume verbatim — LinkedIn allows more narrative. Include keywords from your target job descriptions.

  • Job title field matches your actual seniority
  • Every bullet has a quantified outcome where possible
  • Keywords from target postings appear naturally
  • Start date and end date filled in for every role

4. Skills section (50 skills)

Fill to capacity. LinkedIn uses your Skills section heavily in search ranking. Endorsed skills carry additional weight — ask 5–10 colleagues to endorse your top skills.

  • 50 skills listed (maximum)
  • Top 3 pinned skills are your highest-priority keywords
  • At least 5–10 skills have endorsements
  • Skills match keywords from target job descriptions exactly

5. Featured section

The Featured section appears above your About section and is often the first content a recruiter scrolls to after your headline. Link to portfolio work, published articles, GitHub, or a specific project showcase.

  • At least one Featured item added
  • Links to relevant proof of work (portfolio, GitHub, published content)
  • Featured items have descriptive titles and custom thumbnails if possible

6. Open to Work settings

Recruiter-only mode signals availability without alerting your current employer. Be specific — vague settings produce irrelevant outreach.

  • Specific target job titles listed (not "open to anything")
  • Locations set correctly (including Remote if applicable)
  • Start date reflects genuine availability
  • Recruiter-only mode enabled (not public banner)

7. Recommendations

Three to five strong, specific recommendations from managers and senior collaborators. Each recommendation should name a specific project and include an observable or quantified outcome.

8. Contact and basic info

  • Custom LinkedIn URL (linkedin.com/in/yourname)
  • Email address visible to connections
  • Website or portfolio link in contact info
  • Industry and location fields set correctly
  • Pronouns set if desired

9. Education and certifications

  • All relevant degrees listed with institution and graduation year
  • Relevant certifications listed (AWS, PMP, CFA, CPA, etc.)
  • GPA included if 3.5+ and graduated within last 5 years
